15 UAHS art students recognized in state, regional competitions

Fifteen Upper Arlington High School students have been recognized for excellence in the arts through the 2018 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition and the Central Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards.

Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition

Seniors Rachel R. and Ben R. each received a Governor’s Award of Excellence for placing among the top 25 entries statewide in the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. Rachel’s video, “My Cassette,” and Ben’s video, “Rewind///Repeat,” are featured Seeing Stars by Clara an exhibition of the top 300 works in the state through the end of May in the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower.

Also on display at the Rhodes Tower are works by three other Upper Arlington seniors: “Seeing Stars” by Clara F., “Screens” by Sarah G., and “Phoenix Talon” by Joelle W.

Sarah G. has three additional pieces on display through the exhibition: “I Miss My Dog” and “Self Portrait,” which are among 25 selected artworks in the Governor’s Office display; and “Parasite,” which is among 25 pieces selected for the State Department of Education display.

Ben R. and Joelle W. also received recognition on the regional level, along with seniors Emme C., Avery G., Margaret W. and Cameron W., and juniors Maddy K. and Joanna N.

The Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private. It is chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education, with the goal of providing all young artists the opportunity to gain experience by entering a competition and pursue their talents through scholarships open to all 11th and 12th grade students who have work accepted into the exhibition.

Central Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards

Several of the students honored for the Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition were also recognized through the 2018 Central Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards. From thousands of entries, Upper Arlington High School students received three Gold Key awards, three Silver Key awards and 11 honorable mentions in seven categories.

Senior Sarah G., who has four works on display for the governor’s exhibition, received two Gold Key awards for “I Miss My Dog” in the digital art category and “Lightning God” in mixed media; a Silver Key for “Circus” in digital art; and two honorable mentions, including portfolio.

Junior Joanna N. received a Gold Key for “Our Protectors in the Dark” in drawing/illustration. Caley M., a senior, took home two Silver Key awards and an honorable mention in drawing/illustration.

Receiving honorable mentions were: junior Maddy K. and seniors William H., Charlotte J., Rachel R., Cindy T., Joelle W. and Margaret W.
